Residential Window Film Warranty Questions

The questions to ask before signing a proposal.

Installer carefully fitting film to a residential window

The short answer

A window film warranty may address film defects, glass breakage and insulated-glass seal failure under different conditions and limits. Coverage varies by product, glass and installation. Request the actual written terms before buying, including exclusions, registration requirements, labor coverage, claim procedures and what happens if you sell the property.

The three parts of a typical warranty

1. Film performance. Covers defects in the film, such as bubbling, crazing, delaminating, demetalizing, discoloring and peeling (Avery Dennison). This is usually the longest coverage.

2. Glass breakage. Covers glass that cracks from thermal stress caused by the film, within a set period and up to a dollar cap.

3. Seal failure. If adding film voids your window manufacturer's insulating-glass seal warranty, the film manufacturer may step in for a limited time. Seal failure means a break in the unit's seal that lets in moisture and causes fogging between panes (Avery Dennison).

How two major manufacturers compare

Term 3M (flat glass, residential) Avery Dennison (interior architectural, residential)
Film coverage Lifetime for premium lines; 10–12 years for others; shorter for exterior films Lifetime for most interior films; 5 years for some decorative
What "lifetime" means While the original purchaser owns and occupies the home; doesn't transfer or cover rentals While the original consumer owns and lives in the home; not transferable
Glass breakage Up to 5 years; up to $1,500 per window 5 years for thermal shock; up to $500 per glazing unit
Seal failure Matches OEM seal warranty up to 10 years if film voids it; up to $1,500 per window 3 years; up to $500 per unit

The fine print that matters most

Transferability. Both warranties above define "lifetime" around the original owner-occupant. If you plan to sell in a few years, a "lifetime" warranty may not add value for the next owner.

Rentals. 3M's residential lifetime coverage doesn't apply to rental properties (3M).

Authorized installer. Warranties typically require installation by an authorized or professional installer following the manufacturer's instructions (Avery Dennison).

Registration. Some programs require the dealer to register the warranty. 3M's optional enhanced warranty requires eWarranty registration and proof of purchase, and requires every filmed window in the project to be included (3M Platinum sample).

Glass exclusions. Avery Dennison's warranty excludes, under stated conditions, windows shaded by exterior overhangs or columns, non-rectangular windows over 20 square feet, partial film applications, and certain thick annealed glass (Avery Dennison).

OEM first. 3M requires the purchaser to first pursue any valid window-manufacturer coverage before its seal-failure coverage applies (3M).

Labor. Some coverage pays for replacement film but not labor to remove and reinstall it. 3M's Prestige Exterior line, for example, lists one year of labor coverage (3M).

Curing. 3M advises not washing windows for 30 days and waiting at least 90 days before reporting adhesion or appearance issues, because film takes time to cure (3M). Haziness or small water pockets in the first weeks are often normal.

Removal. Adhesive residue after removal is expected and typically isn't covered (3M).

Health and safety claims. 3M states its films are not designed to prevent skin cancer and are not bulletproof (3M). Warranties cover the product, not outcomes.

Manufacturer warranty vs. installer warranty

The manufacturer warrants the film. The installer is typically responsible for workmanship: contamination under the film, poor edges, gaps and installation damage. Ask the installer for their workmanship guarantee in writing, how long it lasts, and what happens if the company closes. A strong manufacturer warranty is less useful if the installer who has to file the claim is gone.

Keep these records

  • Signed proposal or invoice showing film product name and the windows treated
  • Manufacturer warranty certificate or registration confirmation
  • Your window manufacturer's warranty and proof of purchase at the address (3M Platinum sample)
  • Care instructions
  • Photos of the windows before and after installation

Questions to ask before signing

  • Exactly which product is being installed, and where is its current warranty?
  • What do the film, glass-breakage and seal-failure coverages each include, for how long, and up to what amount?
  • Is labor included for warranty repairs?
  • Who files the claim, and who do I contact if your company is no longer in business?
  • Is the warranty registered with the manufacturer, and will I get confirmation?
  • Does anything transfer if I sell the home?
  • Is my glass approved for this film, and will you note the glass type on the paperwork?
